Definition of the PhD
The PhD is based on an original and educational research project, which should enable the candidate to become an international expert in their scientific field.The PhD is a professional research experience leading to the award of a degree equivalent to eight years of higher education (BAC+8), recognized internationally. The PhD traditionally spans 3 years and up to a maximum of 6 years, during which the doctoral student conducts research on a specific topic. The doctoral student carries out their research under the supervision of a Thesis Director (HDR).
The program concludes with the thesis defense, which allows the doctoral student to obtain the title of Doctor.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible to start a PhD, the future doctoral student must:
- have obtained a Master's degree
- have secured funding
If you do not yet have funding, funded PhD topics are offered through specific application campaigns.

PhDs Funded by the Candidate
If you have funding (employment contract, scholarship, etc.), here is the procedure to follow:
- find a thesis supervisor who is a member of a research unit attached to the doctoral school
- submit your application to the EDGE Pays de la Loire Thesis Committee (ed-edge@doctorat-paysdelaloire.fr)
This application must include the following documents:
- Master 2 transcripts
- Diploma
- Employment contract or proof of funding
- Summary of the thesis project signed by the thesis supervisor
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Letter of recommendation from the thesis supervisor agreeing to supervise you
- Research dissertation

To have your application evaluated and to obtain the doctoral school's letter of commitment, your application must be submitted to your future host site via the site managers.
This application must include the following documents:

- Letter of recommendation from the thesis supervisor agreeing to supervise you
- Research dissertation
